Crochet Chicken

A soft white crochet chicken with a bright red comb, a little yellow beak, and a story that started with not knowing what to make.

Front view of a white crochet chicken with a black eye, a yellow stitched beak, and a red comb.

I was sitting at home, bored and wanting to crochet something, but I had no idea what to make. I wanted a project that felt a little playful, something that did not need to be useful to be worth making. A chicken seemed like a good place to start.

There is something funny about such a simple shape becoming a character. The round white body is soft and unassuming, but add two black eyes, a little yellow beak, and a bright red comb, and suddenly it looks as though it has an opinion. From the front, it is almost all face; from the side, it has that familiar, wonderfully round chicken silhouette.

This is the kind of piece I like making when I do not have a big plan. It is a small reminder that I can begin without knowing exactly where an idea will lead. Sometimes wanting to make something is enough, and sometimes that something turns out to be a chicken.

Assembly and Finishing

Fold and close the base: Fold the opening in half and work single crochets through both layers to join them, leaving 4 unworked stitches (2 on each side).

Facial features: Attach the safety eyes on Round 14, leaving 3 stitches between them. Sew the yellow beak centered on Round 13, spanning approximately 2 single crochets.

Stuffing: Firmly stuff the body with fiberfill.

Top closure: Single crochet across the remaining top opening to close it completely. Fasten off and weave in all ends securely.

Comb (Crest)

Attach red yarn and insert your hook into the first single crochet stitch near the face.

Work the crest sequence: (2 ch, 1 dc inc, 2 ch, 1 sl), then (2 ch, 2 tr, 2 ch, 1 sl).

Fasten off and weave in the ends.
