This was my first time making an accessory, and it was for my dog, Rainbow. He had been part of my life for about a year, which was also roughly how long I had been learning to crochet. During a two-hour drive to Richmond, Canada, I decided it was time to bring those two parts of my life together.

After looking online for inspiration, I chose to make him a hat. It felt playful, practical enough for him to wear, and simple enough for me to shape as I went. I began with the yarn I had brought on the trip, using Rainbow as my live model and adjusting the fit along the way.

The drive ended before the hat was finished, so I continued crocheting that night while we rested at the hotel. A few hours later, the piece was complete: a small handmade accessory shaped patiently for Rainbow, one fitting at a time.
